About Our Club

Club Coaches Jill West & Elizabeth wood formed Skegby RBL Judo Club in 1993, and registered with the British Judo Association (the governing body for judo in the UK). The Club train on a Thursday evening, with members taking part in competition, grading events, training courses etc. Midway through the year the Club achieved it's first medals at the Barlestone Judo Championships with 6 players successful.

In 1994 Elizabeth left to enlist in the Royal Navy, that left Jill to carry on running the Club. The memberships started to grow, eventually attracting 30 members.

In 1999 an "Awards For All" lottery grant enabled the Club to enhance the current mat area.

The Club's highlight came in 2001 when Thomas Eadson achieved a silver medal in the BJA National Championships.

In September 2003, Jill was forced to step down from her coaching roll due to injuries and Edgewood Judo Club Coach, Steve Wilkins stepped in to carry on with the main coaching duties.

2009 saw the Club link up with other Nottinghamshire Clubs to form Nottingham Judo. This allows members the chance to train and take part in other events as part of the Nottinghamshire County Squad.

Also in 2009 the Club linked up with the Ashfield Schools Sport Partnership to deliver the sport of judo in the local primary schools. This scheme allowed pupils to take part in a 6 week introductory course held before or after school. The scheme proved a huge success with the Club doubling it's numbers.

November 2010 the Club received the Sport England "Clubmark" which is the universally acknowledged cross sport accreditation scheme for community sports clubs.

There were big changes during 2012 when it was announced that the Royal British Legion was shutting down, leaving the Club to find a new home. In September the Club moved to it's current location at Healdswood Community Centre.

In 2018, Sam Watson became the first judoka to start the Club as a novice and go on to achieve a 1st Dan (Black Belt).
