About Our Club

Club Coach Steven Wilkins formed the Club in 1990. Initially called Rolls-Royce (Hucknall) Judo Club, it was based at the Rolls-Royce Welfare. As the numbers increased, the Club moved the short distance to the works canteen. During this time the Club was registered with the British Judo Council (MAC) and often competed in various competitions and grading events around the country. The highlight of which came in 1994 when 3 judokas all became National Champions.

To widen the Club's horizons, at the beginning of 1995 the Club moved to Edgewood Leisure Centre, changed it's name to Edgewood Judo Club and registered with the British Judo Association (the governing body for judo in the UK).

In 2003 an "Awards For All" lottery grant enabled the Club to enhance the current mat area and to provide a new safety landing zone.

In May 2007 the Club received the Sport England "Clubmark" which is the universally acknowledged cross sport accreditation scheme for community sports clubs.

In 2008 the Club linked up with the Ashfield Schools Sport Partnership to deliver the sport of judo in the local primary schools. This scheme allowed pupils to take part in a 6 week introductory course held before or after school. The scheme proved a huge success with the Club doubling it's numbers.

2009 saw the Club link up with other Nottinghamshire Clubs to form Nottingham Judo. This allows members the chance to train and take part in other events as part of the Nottinghamshire County Squad

In 2018, Sam Watson became the first judoka to start the Club as a novice and go on to achieve a 1st Dan (Black Belt).

July 2020 saw the closure of Edgewood Leisure Centre, and the Club had to find a new venue. It's present location is The Grove @ Hucknall United Reformed Church.
